    SCCA or NASA?

OK, I want to get involved with one group or the other -- but not both. Based on other people's past auto-x experience, which organization would be the better use of time?

I'm leaning towards SCCA, because of the other scope of racing they cover -- specifically rally racing which is just as near and dear to my heart as any other form.

SCCA is a large organization that can get you on the AutoX course, but NASA is a better organization to get yourself on a real track. Once you gain a lot of experience and you want to actually race, then SCCA might be an option. Just remember that many SCCA classes are VERY competitive and expensive.

Typicall, how do the NASA-sponsored track events work? Do they rent a track for the day, and let drivers out one at a time? In groups?

I'm very eager to get my Z on the track (don't really have the desire to do auto-x). My preference is to have some time alone on the track, but I can imagine that sponsored events might not be able to accommodate that type of request.

NASA does rent out the track for a weekend, and runs various HPDE and race groups, depending on the event and region. Until you run in the more advanced groups, you are assigned an instructor, and go out for 20-30 minute sessions in a group similar to your skill level. SCCA really doesn't offer much in the way of HPDEs.
