View Full Version : plenum + intake filter gains?

I know our G's are well factory tuned, so simple bolt ons don't increase performance all that much. Ive heard a lot about getting plenum or plenum spacers as a worthwhile performance upgrade. But what about intake filters (I'm thinking of getting a Z-Tube and either a simple K&N drop in filter or a JWT Popcharger)? Do most people just get it for sound, or is it a worthwhile performance gain? Do intake filters affect the plenum performance a lot, or is the stock air filter good enough?

Also, if I choose to replace my air filter - should I get the K&N drop in or the JWT Popcharger? I hear mixed reviews for the JWT Popcharger - seems like some people recommend it, while others claim it sucks in to much hot air - and that the stock air box + K&N is better.

Oh and is it true what I hear about exhaust for the G? That they are just for sound (for those who wish to be loud :D ), and that are too expensive for the small performance gain they bring?

i felt a dif with the popcharger... also it sounds really good... I'd recoment going that direction with a ztube

The intake (z-tube forward) is solely for sound.

It depends on the type of exhaust you go with, but generally speaking most AM exhaust for our rides will increase performance and depending on the actual system my cause you to loose a little low end torque, but make up for it in the high end

Plenum = slight but noticeable power.
Intake and exhaust = slight power but merely sound.

short Intake always bring controversy and I'm a believer of sucking hot air for JWT.

plenums or plenum spacers help because the slope of our hood causes the stock plenum to starve the front 2 cylinders of air. just to give you an idea, i only gained about 10rwhp with intake, plenum and exhaust. of course, this is on an automatic and with heavier wheels so others will see more gains.

personally, id get the popcharger, z-tube and 5/16" md spacer with isothermal gasket. it will keep you under $500 and give you decent gains.

As you can see, there are lots of opinions about bolt-ons...

I like the Z-Tube and K&N filter drop-in. It does change the sound of the intake and I think it might improve power a bit. If it didn't make any difference at all... Nissan would have saved money and used the G35 tube in the Z.

I also think the Crawford plenum helps.

Remember that your ECU has to adjust things after you put on a mod like these. It can take a while to adjust and might make your mod seem less powerful when you first put it on.

i second that

Aside from my Vortech, I noticed the most hp gain by the butt dyno with the installation of plenum spacers on both my G's.

I noticed a difference with the Motordyne plenum spacers and isothermal kits on both of my G's.

go with the motordyne 5/16 and isothermal gasket over the skunk2.
